Point shapes for SCHMETZ household sewing machine needles

A common misconception — particularly among those new to sewing — is that all sewing needles have a sharp point. In fact, there are several distinct point shapes, each suited to different materials and applications.

Slightly rounded point

The slightly rounded point is the standard for household sewing machine needles. It handles the vast majority of fabrics and everyday sewing tasks without issue.

Needles with a slightly rounded point:

  • Universal Needle
  • Black Super Universal Needle
  • Topstitch Needle
  • Gold Topstitch Needle
  • Metallic Needle
  • Double Eye Needle
  • Quick Threading Needle

Slim, slightly rounded point

The slimmer taper of this point allows it to enter sensitive fabrics particularly smoothly and gently, reducing the risk of material damage.

Needles with a slim, slightly rounded point:

  • Quilting Needle
  • Black Super Fine Needle

Acute point

The acute point is designed for clean, precise penetration of woven fabrics, producing neat, straight seams.

Needles with an acute point:

  • Longarm Quilting Needle

Slim acute point

With its finer taper, this point is suited to densely woven and coated materials. It produces straight, accurate stitches and helps reduce seam puckering.

Needles with a slim acute point:

  • Microtex Needle

Medium ball point

Rather than piercing fabric threads, the medium ball point pushes them aside and passes through the gaps, preventing damage to the material. It is particularly suited to knits, fabrics containing elastane, denim, and embroidery work.

Needles with a medium ball point:

  • Stretch Needle
  • Super Stretch Needle
  • Black Super Stretch Needle
  • Jersey Needle
  • Jeans Needle
  • Gold Jeans Needle
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Gold Embroidery Needle

Twist point (LL)

The twist point is a cutting point with a lens-shaped cross-section that cuts at an angle to the seam direction. It penetrates leather and leather-like materials with ease, and produces a decorative stitch with a slight leftward inclination on front-threaded household machines.

Needles with a twist point:

  • Leather Needle LL

Half triangular point (DH)

The half triangular point is a cutting point with a triangular cross-section. Like the twist point, it is designed for leather and leather-like materials, but produces particularly straight stitches.

You can easily demonstrate the effect of different point shapes at home. Take a Jeans Needle and a Microtex Needle — both NM 110, as the thicker the needle, the more noticeable the result. Try pushing the Microtex Needle through several layers of denim: you'll find it takes considerable force. Now repeat the test with the Jeans Needle, and you'll notice it passes through much more easily. This illustrates how point shape directly affects penetration resistance — rounded points, for example, part woven and knitted fibres rather than piercing them, making the process easier on both you and your machine.
